Plants are wasting away

I planted a cactus and another planted outside in front of the house. I see that the cactus has frozen and is dead. The location of the 2nd plant and empty. Someone stole it. There is only one hole with water at the bottom. I tell my wife the cactus is dead and I'm upset. I blame myself for having planted it outside. I dare not tell her that we were robbed.
